The weather is often the news here in Chicago, by which I mean it's the lead story. "Sub-zero temperatures! Full story at 10." Then comes the worst part. The anchor, all cozy and warm in the studio, reports that it is - surprise - "very cold out there! In fact, it's so cold that we should stay indoors as much as possible. For further details, let's go to Joe Schmoe out in the field."
Joe Schmoe, for some unfathomable reason, is on location, usually in the Loop, just standing on the sidewalk and saying, "Yes, it certainly is cold out here."
Why???
Joe Schmoe is a pansy! Put him out there on Lakefront Drive with a 37 mph
"breeze" blowing up his parka, or leave him in the studio.
LakeSHORE Drive. Our lovely breezes blow through the city streets in the
Loop, turning the buildings into wind tunnels, effectively freezing poor
Mr. Schmoe just as badly as if he'd been reporting from knee deep in the
lake.
I want to know why Mr. Anchorman is in the studio while Joe is freezing his ass off telling us something we already know. Just what did Joe do to Mr. Anchorman or Ms. Producer to deserve this?
So all the viewers can watch him and thank God that they are not in his
shoes? Or because the sight of an ordinary Chicago winter just adds so
much drama to the weather broadcast? Maybe Joe Schmoe is hoping to some
day be promoted to reporting the weather on location from Hawaii.
