I bought my copy of The Crucified God in a used bookstore, and there's an inscription inside the front cover. It was a birthday present from "Care" (Cara? Caroline?) to Sharon. This is the exact message:
Dear Sharon, The only thing I know about Moltmann is he wrote about 'hope' and he shops at Kmart and buys gee your hair smells terrific and fruit of zee loom underwear! Somehow this seems like a dullard of a birthday present - but I hope it's (it was) a happy - I love you, Care
The big question is: How does Care know all this? Here are some theories:
1. Care was a cashier at Kmart and sold Moltmann shampoo and underwear. But how would she know who Moltmann was?
2. She was a theology student and worked part-time at Kmart.
3. But then what? Moltmann lives in Germany, correct? So he's in the States for a lecture, stops at the local Kmart for some necessities, and coincidentally a theology student who would recognize him rings up his purchases? "Oh, Dr. Moltmann, I attended your lecture yesterday, and by the way fruit of the loom underwear is on sale today."
Something about this inscription is begging for a short story - it has my imagination running.
